What’s Your New Years’ Resolution?

In Dental Care on January 4, 2011 at 4:00 AM

For a lot of us the New Year seems to motivate us – however momentarily – to take better care of ourselves, and exercise more. Although motivation tends to wane on the exercise routine, we can still maintain a healthy lifestyle and sound diet. Even with the occasional indulgence.

In fact that occasional guilty pleasure may be the key ingredient in keeping the motivation level high while still maintaining some sanity. Just don’t go overboard. We can eat a cheeseburger and fries, or dive into some pizza and beer; but the important part is to get back on track immediately after the gluttony episode. We shouldn’t continue the downward spiral, or feel guilty and settle back into complacency. Enjoy the gluttony, then get back on the horse…and enjoy the gluttony again next week. An ice cream sundae reward can be great motivation over the next 7 days!

Resolutions come and go, but significant commitment to a healthier lifestyle is a constant. Small changes over time can equal big-time positive results. And not just for vanity’s sake.

A more sensible diet may actually reduce your risk for gum disease – along with all the other positive benefits we’ve been beat over the head with. It is estimated that over one-third of adults aged 30-90 have pperiodontitis. This is avoidable, and should be taken seriously with all the connections now found between periodontal disease (gum disease) and other health risks such as diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and arthritis.

Share your resolutions, results, pics, words of motivation, and success stories!
